Get a Free Damage AssessmentSoot is not dirt, and treating it like dirt destroys finishes. It's an acidic, oily particulate that behaves differently depending on what burned: fast-burning fires leave dry soot that wipes relatively cleanly; smoldering fires (especially plastics and foam) leave wet, smearing soot that ordinary cleaning grinds permanently into surfaces; kitchen protein fires leave a near-invisible film with severe odor; and each demands different chemistry, in a specific sequence.
Within 24–72 hours, soot's acidity begins permanently damaging materials: pitting metal fixtures, etching glass, discoloring stone and grout, corroding electronics. This is why smoke claims should be assessed immediately even when the fire itself was small — and why 'we'll just repaint' is the most expensive sentence in fire recovery. Paint over unsealed soot and the stains and odor bleed straight through.
Smoke also travels far beyond the burn area — through HVAC ducts, wall cavities, and attic spaces — riding heat currents into rooms that look untouched. Our assessment maps the full migration path with surface testing, so your insurance scope covers actual contamination, not just what's visible. The HVAC system itself gets inspected and cleaned; otherwise it re-contaminates the house every time the fan runs.
Every surface class gets its correct treatment: dry-sponge and HEPA work before wet cleaning, alkaline cleaners for acidic residue, solvent cleaning where water would set stains, ultrasonic cleaning for contents and fixtures, and odor-sealing primer on structural surfaces that can't be fully cleaned.
Smoke & Soot Cleanup — Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clean smoke damage myself?
Small, dry-soot areas on hard surfaces — maybe. But wrong methods make damage permanent: water-based cleaners set wet soot into walls, ordinary sponges grind residue into paint, and household chemicals react badly with acidic soot. Worse, DIY cleanup before documentation can undermine your insurance claim. Get the free assessment first; then, if DIY is viable for your loss, we'll say so.
Why does my whole house smell of smoke when the fire was in one room?
Heat pushes smoke through duct systems, wall cavities, and attics; as the house cools, that smoke condenses onto every cooler surface as odor-bearing residue. This migration is invisible but testable — and it's covered damage under your claim when it's documented.
Will repainting cover smoke damage?
Not by itself. Soot and odor bleed through standard paint within weeks. Surfaces must be cleaned of residue, then sealed with an odor-blocking primer, then painted. Skipping the first two steps is why so many post-fire paint jobs fail.
Is soot dangerous to my family's health?
Yes. Soot particles are small enough to lodge deep in lungs and can carry toxic combustion byproducts from burned plastics, foams, and treated materials. Children, older adults, and anyone with respiratory conditions shouldn't occupy soot-contaminated spaces until they're professionally cleaned.
Does insurance cover smoke damage in rooms the fire didn't reach?
Yes — smoke damage is fire damage under your policy, wherever it traveled. These are the most commonly underpaid claims because the damage hides in cavities, ducts, and closed rooms. Independent documentation is what gets the full scope covered.
What is protein smoke damage?
Residue from burned food or grease — a thin, nearly invisible film with a persistent rancid odor that clings to paint, cabinets, and contents. It's the hardest soot type to remove and routinely requires specialized degreasers and sealing. If your kitchen fire 'looks fine but smells awful,' this is why.
